18-Aug-08 - Club Captain Mark Jones meets the legendary Tony Hadley at V Festival 2008.

Club Captain Mark Jones meets the legendary Tony Hadley at V Festival 2008...

While hanging out at the V Festival in Chelmsford, Club Captain, Mark Jones managed to stumble across the Legendary Tony Hadley from Spandau Ballet. For many years now the club anthem has been "Gold" by Spandau Ballet and on many occasion a late night phone call from some random night club has been made to another team member just to play this tune down the phone to them. When this was explained to Tony, he said he was "honoured" and agreed to pose with the Hornets kit. What a Legend!

04-Aug-08 - Hornets tour to Bath Uni Sports Village...

Hornets tour to Bath Uni Sports Village...

The middle of the Summer heralds the Bath Tour and the Hornets returned for the 8th time. The change in attitude for this summer saw the Hornets continue in the same vein as the Guildford Tour with fun & beers taking the limelight as opposed to hockey & trophies! As with last year's format, teams played in qualifying pool games on the Saturday and again on the Sunday for places in the Cup and Plate competitions. The Hornets' results were mixed on day one and rubbish on day two! So no Cup or Plate entry this year although they still managed to end up in a couple of matched up against some ultra keen sides who were yet to learn the meaning of festival hockey! The results from the weekend are below:

  • Mixed Pool: vs. Bath Rangers L0-2
  • Mixed Pool: vs. Chichester Crickets W1-0 (MJ)
  • Mixed Pool: vs. Leo Sayer All-Dayers D0-0
  • Mixed Pool: vs. Random Factor W1-0 (Scott)
  • Mixed Pool: vs. Ocassional Monkeys W3-0 (Kellog x2, Ben)
  • Mixed Pool: vs. Penge W1-0 (Cat)
  • Mixed Pool: vs. Chameleons W5-0 (W/O)
  • Mixed Pool: vs. Recent Rangers L0-3
  • Mixed Pool: vs. Shaken Not Stirred L1-2 (Scott)

So not the showing of recent years in terms of results but back to the Hornets of old where fun takes the driving seat for a weekend's of touring. Sadly, Bath is also the end of the touring season for the Hornets as the Stratford Festival now takes place during the conventional hockey season when the Hornets have to return to their respective league teams.

Roll on 2009 for the 10th anniversary and the return of the Hornets to the legendary Bournemouth Festival.

20-Jul-08 - Hornets relinquish Guildford trophy.
A slight change in terms of outlook for the Hornets... instead of the recent spate of winning and success it was time to get back to basics and properly enjoy tour. Out the window went 'win at all costs' and in came 'time for more beers' to replace it. However, once again the Hornets were undefeated on day one and entered the Super Cup as favourites to retain the overall trophy - more based on the fact they had won it for the last two years as opposed to having impressed on the pitch. A much tougher Sunday - based more on hangovers and lethargy - saw the Hornets lose and draw the odd game which meant no trophy this year as they finished third instead. The results from the weekend are below:

  • Mixed Pool: vs. Chunder Cats W1-0 (Singles)
  • Mixed Pool: vs. Team Rubbish W1-0 (Ben)
  • Mixed Pool: vs. LadyBoy Development L3-4 (Singles, Nozza, James)
  • Mixed Pool: vs. Bonking Bunnies W2-0 (Cat, Nozza)
  • Mixed Pool: vs. Beastie Boys D1-1 (Ben)
  • Super Cup: vs. GI Janes D0-0
  • Super Cup: vs. Eye of the Tiger W1-0 (Singles)
  • Super Cup: vs. random team who went home moody instead of playing
  • Super Cup: vs. Bonking Bunnies L1-2 (Cat)
  • Super Cup: vs. LadyBoy Development D0-0

And so on to Bath in a couple of weeks as the Hornets move ever closer to their 10yr anniversary.

31-May-08 - Hornets finally beat the Tulse Hill & Dulwich Dragons.
Hornets finally beat the Tulse Hill & Dulwich DragonsAfter playing against the Tulse Hill & Dulwich Dragons at their centenary celebrations and drawing 2-2 in 2007 the Hornets were keen to have a rematch. The last day of May saw this match finally take place again - and unlike the previous encounter where the Dragons refused to let the Hornets spoil their celebrations - the Hornets came away with the spoils. The Hornets having taken a 2-0 lead managed to allow the Dragons to score a goal either side of their 3rd to set up a nervy finish. Fotunately the Hornets held on to win 3-2 at the final whistle. A popular fixture that has the potential to become a yearly event.

20-May-08 - London Weekend plans confirmed.
Another London weekend has been organised for the Hornets - 31-May/01-June. The main focus of the weekend will be a match against Tulse Hill & Dulwich Dragons at Dulwich College on the Saturday. Following that there will be the customary trip to the Swan (or some other equally shabby place) and then on Sunday there are plans to go paintballing in Sidcup. For more information please contact MJ for further details.

08-May-08 - Anglo-Dutch SuperHornets plans confirmed.
The Anglo-Dutch SuperHornets (roughly translated as the men's version of the Hornets) have confirmed entry into the 24e Internationale Dick Ruimschotel Toernooi in Doorn. the tournament takes place in Holland on 13/15-June. And according to the tournament website it will offer the following...

"Just like all other 23 editions it is going to be a great weekend filled with hockey, great acts and parties! With both national and international teams, the 24th International Dick Ruimschotel Tournament promises to be a fantastic tournament! This year there will be 8-a-side matches, played on half pitches. Besides the hockey matches the teams will also compete for the cup with the big ears; the Hans Schot Trophy for the most original, enthusiastic and fun team." http://www.hcdoornevenementen.nl/Eng/IDREng.htm

So who could resist. So to book a place or for more information please contact Gareth for further details.

24-Mar-08 - Hornets brave the elements in Southampton

Hornets brave the elements in Southampton

The 2008 Easter tour saw yet another change of venue as the Hornets continued their southern touring schedule. As Canterbury was full, the venue changed to Trojans Hockey Club in Southampton - a former haunt of Hornet original Andy Potapa. The weather was by far the coldest ever for an Easter tour and it certainly seemed to affect the results... hard to play well with your heands in your pockets and half the team in the bar! So no silverware this time around as the Hornets struggled in the pool games but they came good towards the end to win the 11th/12th Play-off.

  • Mixed Pool 1: vs. Surbiton Strollers L1-2 (Singles)
  • Mixed Pool 1: vs. Kings Jedi L1-5 (Norris)
  • Mixed Pool 1: vs. Broadgate Big Bangers D3-3 (Wobbles, Tilley, Gemma)
  • Mixed Pool 1: vs. Cheaters 2 W5-3 (Wobbles x2, Ellie x2, Singles)
  • 11th vs 12th Play-Off: vs. Space Cadets W2-0 (Ellie, Wobbles)
Next Easter marks the big 10 year anniversay of the founding of the Hornets. Preparations are already in place for a welcome return to the legendary (some might say 'Leg-End'ary) Bournemouth festival. It is hoped that as many past and present members will be available as the Hornets hope to enter Mens, Womens and Mixed teams to celebrate this milestone.

02-Mar-08 - Hornets confirm both Guildford & Bath for 2008.
Touring season is very nearly upon us and so it is time to confirm the program for 2008. No real surprises as the Hornets are back in for both the Guildford LadyBoys Tour - hoping for a third win on the bounce. Also confirmed is the Bath Tour which will see the Hornets attempt to improve on their 2nd place from 2007. For more information about the tour please contact MJ for further details.

20-Jan-08 - Canterbury Full leaves Hornets spending Easter 2008 in Southampton.
Trojans Hockey ClubPlans have had to be changed for the Easter Tour for 2008. It seems that Canterbury is full and that invitations for the Hornets to come along were lost in the post. This means that Easter will have to be elsewhere. After a small bit of research it seems that Southampton also run a very good tour for mixed teams at Easter. So the Hornets are now confirmed as enterting this tour at the Trojans club. And, as promised, it will be back to basics with the traditional camping tour! For more information about the tour please contact MJ for further details.

01-Jan-08 - Canterbury Easter 2008 to be confirmed.
Canterbury Hockey ClubThe Easter Tour for 2008 is planned for the Hornets to be returning to Canterbury in Kent. The main reason for returning is that all concerned last year had a great time and it was the thrill of getting back to basics on the traditional camping tour! For more details please contact MJ.
