Newsletter 2006/07
Since 2003/04 the club has produced weekly match reports. From the start of the 2005/06 season this became a weekly newsletter, distributed during the season, containing match reports from each of the games played that weekend as well as other key information and a selection of adverts and offers.

Remember, remember the 4th November… Well, not particularly in this case. Amidst a weekend of national pyrotechnic exhibitionism, THD had a mixed bag of blazing skyrockets and damp fuses that failed to ignite. Sparks flew for the men’s 4s, who gleefully gained the upper hand over some treasonable on-field behaviour, while the Men’s 2s drew level on the pitch but sparkled in various Oxford evening establishments. The women’s 6s continue to blaze through their league with a crackling victory, while the women’s 2s managed to rekindle previous form to achieve a slow-burning victory. The Dulwich bonfire festivities were enjoyed by many of our players who appropriately ended the evening in the potentially explosive Inferno… Time to set aside the well-thumbed thesaurus and allow you to read on…

There is no greater delight than travelling down to the arse end of nowhere to play a bunch of cheating Saffers. If this was true then everybody’s Christmas would have arrived. Simply speaking there is no greater delight in thrashing a team who do their best to cheat... it is said that cheats never prosper - well it would seem that this is true. In short we won because we are better... better players, better looking, better at maths and better at anything we choose to turn our hands to. In short they were inferior and we were like gods. Worship us for we deserve it... (MJ)

Diamonds vs. London Wayfarers 6s. Won 1-0
A win is three points, isn’t it? Not when it’s a friendly, unfortunately. Once again we bossed the game, yet failed to convert control into goals. To be honest, a good display in general turned into a somewhat frustrating experience, as time and again our pressure failed to pay. The one goal we did score was a most un-Diamonds-like reverse strike by Tim into the far corner...... but then he was one of our ringers, so we’re not going to see that every week. And towards the end of the game, emboldened by the single goal deficit, Wayfarers sprang several massed attacks which could have seen an equaliser.
Tom fitted in well in his first game for us, and Hamza performed solidly at right back. The star of the day, though, was probably Seamus, blowing a senior match for the first time – cool, or what? But where are the goals going to come from? (BD)

Women’s 1s vs. Sunbury: Won 1 - 0
There's not really much to say about this game. We had tonnes of pressure in the first half but couldn't find the goal for toffee. Unfortunately, we couldn't seem find each other either - so many passes went awry. Kath's record of passing the ball direct to the oppo centre forward in each game remains intact, although she did manage to rescue the situation (she must relish the added pressure). Still 0-0 at half time left us wondering who would break the deadlock first. Sunbury had some chances and hit the crossbar from a PC, but it was a well worked move down our right hand side between Faye, EJ and Lou that gave Martha an open goal to slot the ball home. It was almost 2-0 but the umpire just didn't quite play advantage long enough and ruled that the whistle had been blown just before gemma put the ball into the net. So, it was the one goal advantage we hung onto, despite some goal mouth scrambles from Sunbury, and it took a fantastic effort from pipes and the defence to keep it out. Not the prettiest hockey we've ever played, but in patches it was good. And another clean sheet is something to be proud of!!
Team: Pipes, Alex Crawford, Kath Sowter, Jenni Martin, Clare Byrne, Lisa Cox, Faye Billing, Gemma Baker, Lou Morgan, Sharon Smith, EJ Barry & Martha H-J.

Women’s 2s vs. London University 1s: Won 1-0
This week’s match report is dedicated to Loggers who scooped player of the match for 70 minutes of sustained excellence. But mention first of the goal scored by Sarah B, who wisely ignored her captain’s noise polluting yells (which marginally outdid the low-flying jets) to slot home a fine strike off a short corner. And in case you didn’t know ……
A lumberjack (UK: woodcutter) is a tradesman in the logging industry, who performs the initial harvesting of trees for lumber and pulpwood. The term is somewhat archaic, having been mostly replaced by logger. A recent Wall Street Journal survey on the best jobs in the United States ended by listing being a logger as the "worst" job, citing "work instability, poor pay and pure danger." Men were the only people that could be lumberjacks. They usually lived in bunkhouses or tents. The division of labor in lumber camps led to several specialized jobs on logging crews - such as whistle punk, chaser, and high climber. The whistle punk's job was to sound a whistle as a signal to others on the crew controlling the movement of logs and act as a safety lookout, and a good whistle punk had to be alert and think fast as the safety of the others depended on him. The high climber (also known as a tree topper) used iron climbing hooks and rope to ascend tall trees, where he would chop off the limbs as he climbed, and finally chop off the top of the tree. Lumberjacks, especially in the Pacific Northwest, incorporated many terms from the Chinook Jargon into their language including such terms as "skookum" (excellent or impressive), "muckeymuck" (executives or higher-ups), and "hooch" (liquor) which are still familiar today. Women’s 3s vs. Epsom 3s: Lost 0- 3
Despite some members of the team being caught in ‘terrible traffic’ (ok, just me then….) we eventually found all eleven players and the game got off to a confident start with a band of encouraging supporters at the sideline. It even seemed as though the team had finally taken on board some of the Peter’s tips from training; we were even ‘running at angles’….sometimes! With some more outstanding defending from the back and breaks in midfield, together with the consistent hard work upfront from the forwards Mo, Lucy and Helen, we created numerous goal-scoring opportunities. Despite this though we were just not able to finish them off with any conviction - and unfortunate for us, Epsom were - and the game concluded at an unlucky 3-0 defeat. The team were however in high spirits after what seemed to be a marked improvement on our first couple of games, and as a treat the lucky few that went back to the club for teas were treated to a fascinating rendition of ‘How to clean your gum shield’ by Lou Curry (‘It tasted reeaallly nice…’). After last weeks frustration we were all geared up for a good game, and it started off that way too. Despite Sarah doing a bit of a diving header after only a few minutes which resulted in the painful loss of a couple of teeth as well as an integral part of the midfield, we managed to play 20 minutes of what even Peter described as excellent hockey, and managed to get a goal out of it as well to go 1-0 up. The remainder of the first half was a bit more fraught as the opposition tried to break us down, and a couple of us (no names of course) were warned by their referee for apparently nothing serious, but after a stern word from Peter at half time about being in the push and playing the short ball game but keeping the forwards high, we were back and focussed on the task in hand. Or so we thought - the other umpire took offence to Emma and so carded her for an alleged deliberate foot, and then our umpire shortly after clearly wanted to get in on the act and so awarded them a P flick which they converted to make it 1-1. We should have won but we didn¹t although a point is better than none. (NS)

THD Team 5 vs. Reigate Priory Ladies 3: Lost 2-0
Five minutes to go until the whistle was to be blown to start the game and there were still four Team 5 players missing in action. Where were they? How could they be running so late, particularly when back in Crystal Palace three of the players were only two cars behind another car full of Team 5 players?
Finally on to the pitch they came running with only seconds to spare … three of the players apparently having detoured via Gatwick airport on the way (duty-free shopping perhaps?) and one particularly dedicated player who managed to make it to Reigate all the way from Portsmouth. The rest of Team 5 looked heartily relieved and were able to quickly work together to problem solve for one player who was lacking a very critical item of clothing, highly valued by all female hockey players.
And on to the actual match. It was a more focussed Team 5 this week and despite the score line, there were many positives. Our structure held up a lot better with passes that actually made it to our fellow players and following a hot tip from Coach Peter, we managed to direct most of our play to our opponents’ left feet. Additionally, Andrea Beattie courageously volunteered to step in as goalkeeper and did some great saves and emphatic clearances.
Feeling a bit better than after last weeks thrashing, we then all trotted off to ‘teas’ at the Reigate club house where we were able to have our favourite macaroni cheese and corned beef hash combination, along with extra bread. (RF)

Women's 6s vs. Epsom 6s: Won 4-0
Blimey. All that talk of 'W' formations and pressure seems to be sinking in... The week started off badly when we realised we only had ten players, and only one of those was a defender. Thanks to Stephie lending us her services from the 5s, we managed to get a full team onto the pitch, and obviously the surfeit of forwards were galvanised into an "I can score more than you" frenzy. With the first goal going in in under 10 minutes we returned to the restart feeling slightly shocked. With growing confidence the scoring continued throughout the first half, with the makeshift defence rarely troubled. The only downsides were the lack of goals in the second half and the fact that it was a late away game and there was no convenient establishment nearby for us to continue our celebrations into. Still, there's always next week... (KS)
